ALL ABOUT

Jasper, called Egyptian marble, was one of the traditional Jaspers in Ancient Egypt used for amulets, ritual vessels, and jewelry. Native Americans and other indigenous societies carved it into arrowheads for luck and protection, and utilized the stone to call in rain. Jasper is an opaque, microcrystalline variety of Quartz with large, grainy crystals rather than the fibrous layers of Chalcedony or Agate. It occurs in nodules or as fillings in fissures and may be found the world over. Its earthy color is due to high iron content and ranges from deep chocolate brown, gold- to reddish-brown, to tan or ivory, and may contain other minerals or impurities that create its artful banding, rich flow patterns and veining.

The appeal of Jasper is its interesting color patterns and formations. Though it can be a solid color, it is most often mottled, spotted, ringed, or striped. Each Jasper has a unique color or pattern, lending this gemstone much variety. Jasper is an ancient gemstone, and is mentioned in the bible and other classical sources. Though fairly common and affordable today, Jasper in antiquity was regarded as a valuable stone.

USES

Jasper is generally an inexpensive gemstone when used in jewelry. It is cut and polished into cabochons, and used as beads for necklaces and bracelets. It is also carved into cameos which can be worn as pendants.

SIMILAR GEMSTONES
